Hardware and Software Issues
Will I need to buy a Pentium�-based PC?
No, in general, a 486 or better processor with 8 MB of RAM can enable you to take advantage of what Windows 95 offers and can run most 32-bit applications.
Does Windows 95 require 16 MB or more of RAM to run well?
No, 8 MB is recommended and sufficient for most users. However, always check the requirements of your applications.
Should I wait for the next release before upgrading?
There�s no reason to wait.
- Nearly a half million users beta-tested Windows 95.
- This version of Windows is actually the fourth major upgrade.
- Some 18 million copies are now in use, with no major bugs of any kind.
- No new version is planned in the immediate future.
Will Windows 95 run my current applications?
It runs the vast majority of MS-DOS�–based and 16-bit Windows-based applications that run on Windows 3.0 and later.
- Of the 2500 programs that Microsoft tested, only about 100 were completely incompatible with Windows 95.

Will my MS-DOS–based games run on Windows 95?
Most will, and many will run better than they currently do on Windows 3x. Some take advantage of MS-DOS mode for compatibility.
To run in MS-DOS mode
- In My Computer, right-click the application, and then click Properties.
- On the Program tab, click Advanced.
- Click MS-DOS Mode.

Installation
Is Windows 95 difficult to install?
Most users will find setup is easy. The Windows 95 Setup Wizard takes you step-by-step through installation. It automatically recognizes and sets up your peripherals.
Is there a problem with the second disk when installing Windows 95?
If a pre-existing virus is on a PC, it can corrupt the second disk.
To correct this problem
- Run an antivirus program prior to setting up Windows 95.
- Disable all utility, memory manager and virus programs, and screen savers.
- Flip the tab in the upper left corner of Setup Disk 2 to write-protect it.
